manufacturing: what we do

The manufacturing sector is a significant part of the New Zealand economy. The EMA Manufacturing Action Group provides a focus for members in this sector to work together and share ideas for their mutual benefit.

There continues to be a considerable number of issues which are strongly identified as placing potential constraints on manufacturing growth. Areas of concern are:

  • Skill shortages.
  • Venture capital.
  • Logistics and infrastructure.
  • Market access.
  • R&D and technology.
  • Best practice.

MAG has researched these areas and aside from using the results to influence government policy a number of initiatives have resulted.

Our continuing focus is on:

  • Education and training to address skill shortages and numeracy and literacy in the work force.
  • Technology uptake, which includes working with other organisations such as Massey University to introduce programmes to overcome the barriers to the greater use of technology.
  • R&D investment. Encouraging increased investment in R&D through changing legislation to enable 100% deductibility for all research and development in the year of expenditure.
  • Identifying constraints to growth that may be at a manufacturing operational level.
  • Tertiary students work experience.
