manufacturing: best practice

The 'Innovenz' Programme

"New Zealand Manufacturing firms which have adopted "Best Practice" processes are outperforming other similar firms in many businesses and financial indications, including sales growth, value added, profitability and exports."

This is the overall finding of research carried out by a 1997 survey of more than 1400 medium and large manufacturing firms throughout New Zealand. Commissioned by the Ministry of Commerce, the survey is called "Gearing Up". Its results are available on request from EMA.

This research underpins the 'Innovenz' programme, developed by us to cover the seven practice areas identified by the research as 'essential' to continual improvement towards the goal of world class manufacturer.

The 'Innovenz' programme follows a modular format so that businesses can work on one practice at a time without interrupting normal operations. An integral part of the programme is a diagnostic tool called the Kriegsmann self-assessment system. This system provides businesses with a good idea of their weaknesses in relation to the seven key practices, and identifies logical starting places for improvement.

The practices in the Innovenz programme are:

  • Leverage from the best - practical benchmarking.
  • Strategies for sustainable advantage competitive edge.
  • Building relationships that matter - customers and suppliers.
  • Being first and best to market - innovation and creativity.
  • The richest seam - tapping the employee's potential of committed people.
  • Tools for operational effectiveness - continuous improvement.
  • Staying on track - leadership and planning.

Each module is supported by a manual and workbook and is introduced to companies 'in house' or 'in-group'. On-going support and assistance comes in the form of group workshops and follow-up with individual companies who have implemented all or part of the programme.

Michael Gorman facilitates the programme. Michael has more than 20 years' experience in working with manufacturers at an operations level, and his focus is on making improvements rather than introducing theory.

Our approach to introducing the programmes has three stages:

  • What to change?
  • What to change to?
  • How to cause change.

The 'Innovenz' programme works successfully because it focuses on seven core practices and on encouraging people to use their individual strengths to generate solutions to manufacturing problems and concerns.

It:

  • Picks the right things to do.
  • Aims at high goals.
  • Develops the people.
