Level 3 programme

The Certificate in Retail Management is designed to enhance the knowledge and skill-base of people who are already employed in the retail industry.  It is a  flexible delivery course which you have up to one year to complete (although most students complete within six months).  It is intended for people who  want to gain an intermediate supervisory qualification.  Students must have full support from their manager. 

As well as gaining the Certificate in Retail Management, you can also gain the NZQA National Certificate in Retail (Level 3). An application cost for this certificate applies.

Our experienced and friendly tutors will support, motivate and assist you (through e-mail, phone calls, meetings and workshops) to successfully complete the course.

Course Outline


This programme is divided into six modules at Level 3.  It is a paper-based course and you will be assessed using a combination of written assignments, workplace assessment and/or verification of competency by your manager.  You also have the popular option of attending workshops which will allow you to discuss the content, performance and assessment expectations to give you a clear idea of what is required. It is also an opportunity to work on your theory assessments and complete any outstanding practical assessments.

1. Self management and reflective practice
- Consider your personal responsibility toward your role and contribution towards the success of the business.

2. Communication in a retail environment
- Listen to gain information in an interactive situation
- Employ customer services for differing customer behaviours
- Serve customers face to face in a wide range of contexts
- Apply skills and qualities as a salesperson in retail or distribution
- Self management and reflective practice

3. Advanced customer service
- Sell goods and/or services over the telephone
- Enhance work practices – application of product/service knowledge
- Respond to customer complaints face to face in retail or distribution
- Respond to customer complaints by phone in retail or distribution

4. Workplace Performance
- Participate in a team in retail or distribution environment
- Give and respond to feedback on performance
- Maintain enhance and integrate knowledge of legislation

5. Advanced stock control
- Maintain and take care of stock
- Demonstrate knowledge of stock control in retail/distribution
- Order goods to meet pre set stock levels in retail/distribution
- Receive inwards goods in retail or distribution

6. Health and safety in a retail workplace
- Apply safe work practices in the workplace
- Handle and store hazardous substances in retail or distribution
