Since improving productivity is vital in today’s competitive world, a clear understanding of the term
productivity is essential. Productivity is defined by some from an economic standpoint. Others take a
management viewpoint, while yet others look at productivity from other perspectives. A simple
definition that applies to all businesses and individuals is that productivity is the measure of how
efficiently goods and services are delivered. Productivity in a broad sense is concerned with the
overall effectiveness of getting things done. In a narrower business sense, productivity is doing what
it takes to make more money. Productivity means making more from your available resources. It
means working smarter rather than harder. From a personal perspective, productivity enables you to
develop your income potential.Course Date

Whitireia - Small Business Development Programme

Small Business Development Programme
The Small Business Development Programme (SBDP) is a business development and capability-building tool for small to medium sized businesses and start-ups.
The best businesses don't grow by accident! They grow through the application of essential business development tools and techniques.
What could your business do if you were given:
• A business coach / facilitator
• An internationally recognized development structure
• Networking opportunities
• Access to business development resources
• The backing of one of New Zealand’s leading tertiary institutions?
How does it work?
The programme is spread over nine months. Participants select five critical issues that are relevant to their business and develop plans to address these issues. A goal-setting and action based approach to business development is used which makes the programme very relevant, highly customised and extremely results orientated.
The emphasis is on developing knowledge, techniques and tools that can be used in everyday situations to grow stronger business propositions. The programme provides facilitation, coaching and access to business development resources and focuses on problem solving. Other aspects of the programme include structure, accountabilities, peer mentoring, collaboration and information sharing amongst participants.
Programme structure
Seven modules, completed as follows:
Module 1 (Stage 1)
This module involves reviewing your business (or business idea) and your ability to take the business forward. This review will help you to identify the key issues facing your business and how you will address these in the ensuing modules. You will choose the five most pressing issues. These issues will become the five business goals that you focus on in stage 2 of this programme.
Modules 2- 6 (Stage 2)
You get to work on each of the five business goals identified at Stage 1. These modules involve projects that deal with the key business issues of your choice. You will learn the art of getting things done and reviewing how well you have performed.
Module 7 (Stage 3)
This final module involves a full review and self-assessment of your business. You will prepare a strategy for the next 12 months, putting into practice the disciplines you have learned through the programme.
Each module is expected to take four to six weeks to complete. Participants are given a mentor/facilitator to assist them over the duration of the programme. Participants and mentors are in regular contact to discuss options and progress.
Participants are assigned to a workgroup with three or four other participants. Workgroups meet monthly to discuss progress, actions and solutions affecting their business development.
The ‘additional’ time commitment required of each participant is expected to be minimal. Most of the time, participants will be actually working on/in their day-to-day business. Each participant will collate a dossier of material for each goal undertaken. This dossier can include notes, emails, letters, brochures, journal entries and reflections, depending on the individual and the module. The purpose is to encourage participants to formalise this process and to reflect on what they have done.
The expectation isn’t that we are creating more work for participants, rather, that we are helping them to think carefully about the work they would be doing anyway to advance their business activity.
Who should participate?
This programme is suitable for…
• New ventures and start-ups
• Existing businesses / business owners / entrepreneurs
• Contractors and consultants
• Managers, salespeople and commission agents.
What do I get?
Each business is unique so what you bring and the goals you set at the beginning will determine your success.
• Business facilitation and coaching support for nine months
• A structured process for developing your business
• Peer group interaction and support with other business owners and entrepreneurs

Flexible start dates 4-5 weeks per module and 9 months for full programme of seven modules
